LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Obsessed," a new " Fatal Attraction "-style thriller starring R&B singer Beyonce Knowles , easily took the crown at the weekend box office in North America , selling an estimated $28.5 million worth of tickets, its distributor said on Sunday.

The movie cost about $20 million to make, and industry observers were forecasting an opening in the mid-teen millions, said Screen Gems , the low-budget division of Sony Corp's Columbia Pictures .

Knowles, the former Destiny's Child frontwoman who recently played blueswoman Etta James in "Cadillac Records," stars in "Obsessed" as a woman who fights to save her marriage when a pretty office temp ( Ali Larter ) falls hard for her husband ( Idris Elba ).

Dat's Right BITCHES!!!! -'Obsessed' tops Friday box office

Beyonce Knowles hit No.1 yesterday -- not on the music chart, rather the box office chart.

The songstress-thesp's thriller "Obsessed" rang up an estimated $11.2 million of B.O. bling on Friday, making it the highest opening day for an April thriller and the second highest ever for a Sony-Screen Gems release. Previous opening day champ for an April suspense title belonged to 2007's "Disturbia" which generated $8.8 million. The top opening day for a Screen Gems pic belongs to 2005's "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" which banked $11.3 million.

Also starring Ali Larter and Idris Elba, "Obsessed" centers on a predatory office temptress (Larter) who sets her sights on ruining an investment banker's life and marriage. "Obsessed" also marks the second highest opening day for Knowles, slotting behind her 2002 debut "Austin Powers in Goldmember" which grossed $26.5 million.

In terms of its hold on the No. 1. spot this weekend, "Obsessed" is irreplaceable. Stepping over three other wide releases yesterday, the thriller, playing at 2,541 theaters, is expected to easily clear the $22.2 million opening weekend posted by "Disturbia."

Beyoncé: It's very frustrating now. ... It's great because people can get a little sneak peak and say, "Oh, I wanna come to the show" or "I don't wanna go to that show" (laughs), and I'm fans of people so I go on there and check it out too. But you put so much of your heart and time into the wardrobe ... it's kind of unfortunate that people can see the show months before you get into their city, but that's life.

AP: When you sang "At Last" for the Obamas at the inauguration ball, Etta James said some pretty harsh things about you but later said she was joking. Did you know she was joking?

Beyoncé: I played Etta James (in last year's "Cadillac Records"), so I did my research, I read her book. I was not at all surprised. That's Etta. She's hilarious (laughs).

AP: Your sister Solange twitters all the time. Do you do it?

Beyoncé: My sister is the Twitter queen. She told me about the twittering, but I don't get it, I feel like I'm getting really old. I'm like, what? I don't understand. Just call me.

STORYTIME KIDS: The Legend of CEPHUS HARRIS

Today, you are going to learn about the story of a man with SEVERE identity crisis. And so the story goes...

There once was a man who went by the name Cephus Harris and he had dreams of being a SINGER (MAMA I WANT TO SING!). So Cephus embarked upon a journey towards fame and fortune. He happened upon a wizard who granted Cephus his wish. Several days later Cephus awoke to find himself somewhat of an androgenous looking woman with SUPERIOR Matrix skills. Alas, the wizard forgot to grant him vocal chops. He reasoned that this was perhaps for the best and he would "fake it till he made it." (Little did he know that this was never going to happen)

The wizard re-appeared and bestowed unto Cephus a box. In this box was his new identity - Ciara, Matrix attire and a record called Goodies. A storybook beginning wouldn't you say? This mysterious Goodies was a hit by all standards. But then something happened! Word began to spread through the countryside that Ciara was in fact a man who couldn't actually sing and the people grew suspicious. Sadly, Cephus began to fade into obscurity despite releasing record after record.....



Then a curious thing occured. Cephus started observing the prolonged reign the Queen of R&B Music - Beyonce had been experiencing since the moment she had released her first record. He thought to himself, "Why can't I just mimick Queen Bey?" Cephus was a smart man and he knew that Queen Beyonce was the BEST in the land. So then he did this.....






AND even this....




And the Queen's subjects were in an uproar. There was an uprising throughout the land!!! But the Queen was above all that petty nonesense and she never responded to Cephus' shenninghans. Cephus was defiant. He had already enlisted the help of one known to ruin many a singing career of the people of this R&B land, the one Jester Takeabreak. Cephus paraded himself like a slave over Jester and the people laughed. Cephus was desperate and he sought to tell his story. He blabbed about being the originator of Her Majesty's ideas even though the people had already seen these ideas before. This further angered the Queen's people and relegated Cephus to a pariah. Still the Queen did not respond. Soon the Queen will be holding a celebratory feast for all her people where they will dine on the rich banquet Her Majesty always provides at these events.


And what of Cephus you may ask? Well, there is a Princess in another land recovering from terrible times. Cephus will act as an opening singer to this Princess' feast, which is known throughout all the lands to be quite dull indeed! And so ends the story of Cephus Harris.

But his latest on-screen foray with music superstar Beyoncé Knowles in the upcoming flick Obsessed may be his most memorable role to date. In an exclusive interview with rolling out, Elba gave us the inside scoop regarding his time on set with Knowles. ~dewayne rogers

Elba's take on the film receiving a PG-13 rating …

"The process of making a movie with Beyoncé was unique, just because she's such a huge superstar. So when I first looked at the script, I thought the film could have and probably should have received an "R" rating on subject matter alone. But Beyoncé has such a responsibility to her younger fans that I believe it was necessary for them not to try certain things because of that responsibility."

On Beyoncé's growth on set …

"I think this was a very important role for her, because it was the first time she wasn't playing a singer. But when we first started taping, it was difficult for us to really connect as artists because she has such a huge machine behind her. So in the early going it felt divided … almost like it was her and her team on one side, and everyone else on the other. But once the cameras started rolling, she really opened up and those walls began to fall. As a result, I really saw her grow as an artist, and I think you'll be able to see it as well when you watch the film."
